The design of hospitals is such that doctors have
all the necessary facilities at hand ( such as laboratories, nurses, assistants,
instruments, scanners, consultants and specialists ) to help them carry out their
duties. However, the same cannot be said of patients, who always have a
negative perspective of the hospital and view it as a very uncomfortable place to be in .
The good news is that hospitals have started reviewing their facilities and are taking patient complaints seriously. They are upgrading their service delivery to patients , in order to make them feel comfortable , and
in the process boost their morale and quicken the healing process.
On a sad note however, visitors remain the most
neglected lot in most hospitals . Most institutions view them as a nuisance
whose presence in the hospital is a compromise. In fact, it is very true to say
that hospital visitors are never accommodated but tolerated. Visiting
arrangements in hospitals only serves to complicate matters for visitors, most
of whom normally end up on a collision course with hospital staff, with
numerous complaints following. What does Dr. Malpani recommend?
The truth is that these visitors will fall sick
at some point in life and therefore hospital management should ensure they are treated
with dignity and have a reason to choose that specific hospital over others when they require medical care. This is a cheap but effective way of marketing the hospital to potential
clients ; and all the hospital needs to invest in are heath
education DVDs, reading materials and video streaming of educational documentaries
on health, to show visitors that they provide high quality medical services !
