The number of reviews
about the experiences of men undergoing infertility treatment is much less than
the discussions of what women go through. This is surprising, because men are
responsible for 40% of infertility – and are an integral part of the
infertility treatment as well. Why aren’t they willing to share what they go
through ? A major reason for this is that generally men are hesitant to
communicate about their emotions. On the other hand, women realize the
necessity to share. They interact with others about their feelings and thus,
lessen their emotional load.
Infertile men have a haunting fear that they may be
shooting blanks, which is the major reason why they are unwilling to get their
semen tested. It is very convenient for a man to presume that it is his wife
who has the medical problems, when she is unable to get pregnant. They often have
an ill-conceived belief that it is the wife’s job to have a baby. Many men even
equate their sexual performance with their fertility, which is why they don’t feel
they need testing of their semen if the former is good enough.
Men are surreptitiously anxious that their semen may not
show up enough motile sperms upon testing. Besides, a good number of men are
aware of the fact that male infertility is the reason behind 40% of infertility
complaints. They are scared that
they maybe one of these 40% !
Their fear stems from the belief that any revelation of
their infertility by a semen analysis will disgrace them before their wife as
well as society. Due to a lack of understanding about the correlation between
sexuality and fertility, men are afraid that their infertility may become a
reason for them to be considered sexually inadequate.
Many men even harbor the worry that they may not have any
more sperm left, as in their teenage years they masturbated frequently. Because
of a number of myths and misconceptions, others worry about other issues, which
they feel impact their fertility , such as:
their penis being
too small ;
their erection not being sufficiently hard ; or
their semen not being viscous enough.
Not sure if your sperm count is normal ?
