Why Dr. Malpani does all his patient consultations personally

A new patient once wanted to fix up an appointment with the doctor at Malpani clinic. When she called the clinic, she inquired as to whether she will get to see Dr. Malpani. This question was somewhat baffling for my receptionist because at Malpani Fertility Clinic, I make sure I consult with all patients myself. The patient was pleasantly surprised when she was told about the policy of Malpani Clinic because when she had visited other IVF clinics earlier, she had only seen assistants.

There are no assistant doctors at Malpani Clinic and we are pleased to say that I consult all my patients myself, in addition to answering all the e-mails. Dr Anjali does all the scans, egg collections and embryo transfers on her own. The approach at Malpani Clinic is highly interactive with the patient on a personal level. However, I am able to see fewer patients as it could have been otherwise because I take about 30 minutes per consultation.

What we do is different from other IVF clinics where the initial history is taken and consultation is done by the assistant doctors so that the main doctor can see more patients. Why then does Malpani Clinic not engage an assistant doctor to do this job so that I can be more efficient and give a high throughput? After all,  more patients mean more income for the clinic.

Malpani Clinic has intentionally made this decision because I believe that to take the history and to talk to the patient is the foundation of medicine and therefore, an important task for the doctor. Naturally, I do not believe in relegating this job to someone else. Though other IVF doctors are also aware of this principle, they only consult ‘VIP’ patients in person. The rest of their ‘ordinary’ patients are seen by their assistants. But at Malpani Clinic, all our patients are VIPs.

Do you want to be treated like a VIP ?
